Taiwan's most beautiful forest school.
Neihu Elementary School, founded in 1956, is famous across Taiwan as the country's "most beautiful forest elementary school" (最美森林小學), its Japanese-inspired wooden campus set among preserved cedar and pine forest along the scenic route to Xitou Forest Recreation Area. The original campus was severely damaged in the catastrophic 1999 921 earthquake — of 293 schools nationwide destroyed by the quake, Neihu was the very last to be rebuilt, reopening only in 2004 after years of careful reconstruction. Today the school opens its grounds free to visitors on weekends and holidays.
