The most beautiful school in Taitung.
Longtian Elementary is the oldest school in Luye Township, founded in 1917 under Japanese colonial rule as "鹿野尋常高等小學校" — a school built exclusively for the children of Japanese settlers in the newly established immigrant farming village of Longtian. During this period, the school was so admired for its design and grounds that it was widely called "the most beautiful school in Taitung." A separate school for Taiwanese and Indigenous children was founded alongside it in 1923, and the two were later merged. Longtian's campus today still preserves a Japanese-era principal's residence — now a registered historic building — along with one of Taiwan's earliest nursery and daycare facilities, physical reminders of the school's century-long history at the heart of one of Taitung's most storied colonial-era communities.
