A century-old school at the heart of old Tainan.
Liren Elementary School was founded in 1898 as "Tainan Second Public School," initially borrowing classroom space near Shuixian Temple, in what is today's Tainan Yongle Market area. Its first principal was Hirata Tadao, leading three original teachers and 57 students. The school was later known as Bao Public School and Bao National School before taking its current name, Liren. It marked its 100th founding anniversary with a ceremony attended by the Vice President of the Republic of China. Liren is also a traditional Tainan baseball powerhouse; its alumni include Chen Zhi-yuan, a pitcher on Taiwan's 1969 Little League World Series championship team, and Huang Qing-hui, a member of the 1971 championship squad. Its Zhongxiao Building, a Japanese colonial-era structure, was designated a Tainan City historic site in 2003 under the name "Original Bao Public School Building."
