An old school on a sinking street.
Linbian Elementary School was founded in 1913, in the 19th year after Japanese rule began, as "Linzibian Public School" (林仔邊公學校) under Japan's compulsory education policy. It was renamed "Linbian National School" in 1941, one of several name changes through the colonial period, making it one of the oldest institutions in Linbian Township. Old Japanese-era merchant houses still line Zhongshan Road in front of the school gate — their windows now nearly level with the road, a striking sign of the land subsidence that has reshaped this coastal community over the decades.

Grouper country on the recovery road.
Linbian Township's coastal aquaculture economy, centered on grouper (石斑魚) farming, developed alongside a history of significant land subsidence — visible right outside the school gate in the sunken old buildings along Zhongshan Road. The township also carries the memory of Typhoon Morakot's devastating 2009 flood. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
