Founded by a community, one household at a time.

Ligang Junior High was founded in June 1947 by local Yanpu Township elder Xie Quan-zai, on the site of a former Japanese-era immigrant-village elementary school. Funded by NT$700,000 raised locally by Yanpu Township residents, the school opened its doors on November 8, 1947 — a date it still marks as its founding anniversary — under its first principal, Yang Qing-hui. Initially named Kaohsiung County Xinxing Junior High School, it was transferred to Pingtung County in 1950 and renamed Ligang Junior High. In 1962 a Jiuru branch class was added, becoming independent as Jiuru Junior High in 1963, and a Yanpu branch spun off as its own junior high in 1964.
