One island, one school, two divisions.
Lanyu High School was founded in 1969 as Lanyu Junior High School, serving the children of Orchid Island — home to the Tao (also known as Yami) people, Taiwan's only Austronesian island-dwelling Indigenous community, culturally and linguistically distinct from Taiwan's other fifteen recognized Indigenous peoples. In 1997 the school was restructured into a "complete school" (完全中學), adding a senior high division so that Tao students could complete secondary education without leaving the island. As of 2024 it enrolls roughly 77 students across six classes in junior high and about 38 students across three classes in a comprehensive senior-high track. Since 2018 the school has been transitioning into Taiwan's first fully-integrated junior-and-senior-high Tao Indigenous experimental education program, with full implementation from 2020 — meaning Tao language, ocean-canoe and flying-fish traditions, and land-based culture are now woven into the curriculum across all six grades, from age twelve through eighteen.

🏝️ The Only Secondary School on the Island
As the sole junior-and-senior-high institution serving Orchid Island, the school carries outsized importance for every Tao family on Lanyu whose children reach secondary-school age.
Orchid Island and the Tao people.
Lanyu Township — Orchid Island — is home to the Tao (Yami) people, Taiwan's only Indigenous community traditionally living on an offshore island rather than the main island, with a culture built around plank-canoe (tatala) building, flying-fish-season rituals, and a distinct Austronesian language unlike any of Taiwan's other fifteen recognized Indigenous peoples. Lanyu High's experimental curriculum is one of the clearest expressions of that heritage in the island's public life today.
