About · 學校簡介

A mountain school on the South Cross-Island Highway.

Taoyuan Junior High School — in Kaohsiung's mountainous Taoyuan District, not to be confused with Taoyuan City in northern Taiwan — traces its junior-high roots to around 1968, when it operated as part of a combined 'Taoyuan National Elementary and Junior High School.' It separated into its own independent junior high in 2005. As of 2024 the school had about 52 students across 6 classes, and virtually all students are Indigenous, mainly Bunun, with some Hla'alua (拉阿魯哇) students as well. In 2018, a student performance troupe traveled to Hachioji, Japan.

🏔️

According to the Bunun community's own account, Bunun families migrated into this part of Kaohsiung's mountains from Nantou and Taitung roughly 180 years ago. The Hla'alua (拉阿魯哇) community considers itself among the region's earliest inhabitants. These are presented here as the communities' own oral traditions, not as verified historical fact. Taoyuan Junior High serves this Bunun-majority, Hla'alua-inclusive mountain community today. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
