Over a century serving a Bunun community.
Taoyuan Elementary School traces its origins to 1908, when it was established under Japanese colonial rule as an educational institute for Indigenous children. It was renamed multiple times over the following decades, merged into a combined 'Taoyuan National Elementary and Junior High School' institution between 1999 and 2000, and split back into an independent elementary school in 2005. Today it has 61 students across 7 classes, and 97% of its students are Indigenous, mainly Bunun.

Bunun families along the Laonong River.
Per the community's own oral tradition, Bunun families relocated to this area from Nantou and Taitung roughly 180 years ago, with the Hla'alua (拉阿魯哇) people regarded by the community as even earlier inhabitants of the region. These accounts are presented as the community's own framing, not as independently verified history. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
