Sanmin Junior High School opened in 1963 as 高雄市立第九初級中學 (Kaohsiung Municipal Ninth Junior High School), part of a wave of new junior highs established under the era's "province runs senior high, city and county run junior high" administrative policy. It took its present name, 三民國中, in 1968 — honoring the same Three Principles of the People (三民主義) that had already given the surrounding district its modern name in 1945, when 三塊厝 was renamed 三民.
三民國中創校於民國52年（1963年），原名「高雄市立第九初級中學」，正值當時「省辦高中、縣市辦初中」的行政政策推動期。學校於民國57年（1968年）更名為「三民國中」，校名與三民區1945年由「三塊厝」更名而來的用意相同，皆取自孫中山先生的「三民主義」。
