Where the district's name really began.
Sanmin Elementary School opened on July 1, 1921, as 高雄第三公學校 (Kaohsiung Third Public School), first housed inside a Three Mountain Kings temple (三山國王廟) before it had its own dedicated campus. Through multiple renames over the following decades, the school became the direct namesake origin for "三民" (Sanmin), the name that replaced the old hamlet name "三塊厝" in 1945. In 2020, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary, an event attended by Kaohsiung mayor Chen Chi-mai.

From "Sankuaicuo" to Sanmin.
As the district's oldest school, Sanmin Elementary's history traces directly back to 三塊厝, the pre-1945 hamlet name later replaced by "三民" to honor Sun Yat-sen's Three Principles of the People. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
