Pingding Elementary School was founded in August 1962 as “高雄縣小港鄉坪頂國民學校,” a township school under what was then Kaohsiung County. When Siaogang Township was annexed into Kaohsiung City in 1979, the school was renamed to reflect its new municipal status, becoming the Pingding Elementary School known today. Its name, “坪頂” (“top of the flatland”), is a common Taiwanese toponym describing elevated farmland terraces — a naming pattern found across the island's rural districts.
坪頂國小創立於民國51年（1962年）8月，原名「高雄縣小港鄉坪頂國民學校」，隸屬當時的高雄縣。民國68年（1979年）小港鄉併入高雄市後，學校隨之更名為現今的坪頂國小。校名「坪頂」意指「平坦高地的頂端」，是台灣鄉村地區常見的地名用法，描述地勢略高的農田台地。
