A century of service to a community now facing relocation.

Fenglin Elementary School traces its founding to April 20, 1918, during the Japanese colonial era (Taisho 7), when it opened as “台南廳大林蒲公學校,” a public school under what was then Tainan Prefecture, serving the fishing village of Dalinpu (大林蒲). It was renamed “鳳林國民學校” in 1951, the same year it spun off its own branch school, Fengming (鳳鳴分校). In 1962, Fenglin became the first school in Kaohsiung to run a nutritious school-lunch program. It later formed sister-school relationships with a school in Japan (1983) and, fittingly, with a same-named Fenglin Elementary School in Hualien County (2008). The school celebrated its full 100th anniversary in November 2017. Since then, Fenglin's story has become closely tied to the ongoing Dalinpu village relocation — the community's residents are being resettled as part of Kaohsiung's Nanxing (南星) plan to expand the city's port and steel industry, with the original village site expected to eventually become industrial land. This page reflects the research available at the time of writing; we do not assert a specific current operating status for the school beyond what has been documented, given the relocation planning is ongoing.

🏘️

Fenglin Elementary's home community of Dalinpu (大林蒲) is at the center of one of Kaohsiung's most significant ongoing relocation efforts: residents are being resettled under the city's Nanxing (南星) plan to expand the adjacent port and steel-industry zone, with the historic village site expected to eventually be redeveloped as industrial land. The relocation has been under discussion and planning for years; this page reflects the research available at the time of writing and does not assert a specific current operating status for the school beyond what has been documented. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
