An old school with a new social mission.
Datong Elementary was established in 1935 during the Japanese colonial era as Kaohsiung's Fourth Public School (高雄市第四公學校), split off from the city's Third Public School. Renamed several times over the following decades, it was designated in 1975 to host an experimental class for gifted children. In 2016, the school partnered with the city government and a local hospital to convert unused classrooms into "Datong Fule Learning Hall" (大同福樂學堂) — reportedly Taiwan's first repurposing of school space for elder social-welfare care. As of 2025, the school serves around 276 students.
