From a branch school to a protected landmark.
Zhongshan Elementary was founded in 1937 (Showa 12) as a branch of Takara Public School (寶公學校昭和分教場), becoming an independent school in 1939 under the name "Showa Public School" (昭和公學校). The school was severely damaged in the Keelung Air Raid during World War II, forcing a relocation, and was renamed multiple times after the war before settling on its current name, 中山國小, in 1968. Today the school's campus spans 2.4 hectares, and one of its historic buildings is registered as a protected historic structure.
