A mountain-village school that outlasted the mines.
Fuxing Elementary School was founded in April 1922 as the "Youna Improvement Study Hall," serving the children of miners in the remote mountain village of Youna. It was renamed Fuxing Elementary School in January 1969 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in April 2023. During the coal-mining boom of the 1960s, its student population once exceeded 700, but as the mining industry declined, enrollment has since shrunk to roughly 150 students today.

Enrollment once topped 700 students during the 1960s coal-mining boom, but has since settled around 150 as the local mining industry wound down — a living record of Qidu's economic history.
Youna, a former coal-mining village.
Fuxing Elementary's rise and decline track the boom and bust of Qidu's inland coal industry — a companion resource economy to Keelung's coastal port and fishing trade found in the city's harbor districts. See the Keelung county page for more on the region.
