A century-old school, twice renamed and rebuilt.
Kaixuan Elementary began in 1913 as the private "Qiongshan Elementary School" in Qionglin Village. It was renamed "Jinhu Central Public School" in 1951, then relocated to Zhongxing Ridge and renamed "Kaixuan Elementary School" in 1964 — commemorating the military's contributions during the martial-law period, and making it another of Kinmen's six "General Schools." During the 1958 August 23 Bombardment, evacuated elementary students from Lieyu (Little Kinmen) were consolidated at the former Kinmen Middle School site as a temporary "United Nations School." A new NT$276.3 million campus was inaugurated on July 12, 2022.

A name and a history forged by wartime.
Kaixuan's very name commemorates military contributions during Kinmen's martial-law "wartime governance" period, and its district absorbed displaced students during the 823 Bombardment evacuation of Little Kinmen — a direct link to the island's frontline history. See the Kinmen county page for more on the region.
