A rare home for two tribal cultures, side by side.
Jiumei Elementary School occupies a distinctive place among Taiwan's indigenous-area schools: it is one of the very few nationwide running a formal bicultural education program that teaches both the Bunun and Tsou languages together. Located in Wangmei Village at the foot of Yushan, the school serves a rare mixed Bunun-and-Tsou tribal community. Its commitment to this dual heritage extends into its architecture — new school buildings incorporating both Tsou and Bunun architectural elements won the 2021 Jianzhu Yuanzhi Award, and the school built a traditional Tsou "hʉfʉ" structure with support from the government forestry agency.
