Music as memory, on a hillside above the Naluo River.
Jinping Elementary was founded in 1933, during the Japanese colonial era, and sits below Raro Mountain on a hillside on the north side of the Naluo River in Jianshi Township. It is a tiny school — just over 40 students in total — serving the area's Atayal Indigenous community. Music is central to how the school passes on Atayal culture: its curriculum features traditional Atayal folk songs, a wooden xylophone ensemble, and a choir. Alongside its library, the school also operates a community reading station, extending its role beyond the classroom.

The Naluo River valley.
Jinping Elementary serves an Atayal Indigenous community in the Naluo River valley of Jianshi Township, where traditional folk songs and the wooden xylophone remain living practices passed down through the school's music program, not simply preserved as history.
