A small school shaped by a shrinking island population.
Jibei Elementary dates to the Japanese colonial era and took its current name, "Penghu County Baisha Township Jibei National Elementary School," in 1968. In 1945, the school had six classes and 389 students — a sizeable enrollment for a small offshore island. It added a kindergarten class in 1997, but like many of Penghu's outlying-island schools, enrollment has since declined sharply, down to around 35 students and 14 teachers in recent years.
