Jianxing Junior High School was approved for establishment on November 15, 1967 and formally founded on August 1, 1968. Its campus includes a historic building, the former Nanmen Elementary School building (原南門尋常小學校舍), built in 1919 for a school first founded in 1915; the building was later renamed Nanmen National School, then served as Tainan city government offices after the war, before finally being transferred to Jianxing in 1969. The school originally admitted boys only, opening to female students in 2008. Its motto, "忠誠勤樸" (loyalty, sincerity, diligence, simplicity), still guides the school today.
建興國中於1966年（民國56年）11月15日獲准設校，1968年（民國57年）8月1日正式創校。校內保留一棟歷史建築——原南門尋常小學校舍，興建於1919年，其前身可追溯至1915年創立的學校；該建築其後改稱南門國民學校，戰後一度作為臺南市政府機關使用，直到1969年才移交建興國中。學校原僅招收男學生，2008年開始招收女學生。校訓「忠誠勤樸」至今仍是學校治校的核心精神。
