A school that crossed district lines.
Jiantan Elementary School was founded in 1955 as a Zhongshan District school, a branch and successor of Zhongshan Elementary School's Jiantan branch. Uniquely among Shilin's schools, it was only administratively reassigned to Shilin District on February 1, 1989, when district boundaries were redrawn — most other Shilin schools trace their whole history within the district. Its main teaching buildings, "Qianzhan Building" and "Xinsheng Building," date to 1972; a kindergarten was added in 1987, and a resource class for students with disabilities in 1980. The school takes its name from Jiantan (Sword Lake/Pool), a site tied to a local legend about a sword left behind by a Ming-dynasty loyalist general.

A riverside crossing steeped in legend.
Jiantan Elementary takes its name from the Jiantan area near the Keelung River crossing into Shilin from Zhongshan District — a site steeped in a centuries-old local legend about a general's sword, reflecting the folklore layer of Shilin's riverside geography. See the Taipei county page for more on the region.
