A century-old school reclaims its original name.
Jianshi Elementary opened in 1918, during the Japanese colonial era, as the "Jiale Aboriginal Children's Education Institute," taking its present Chinese name in 1968. In 2019, as the school transitioned into an Atayal-culture-based experimental school, it restored the site's traditional Atayal place name, "Klapay," officially becoming Klapay National Experimental Elementary School. Although the school's own campus footprint is only 1.611 hectares, its district covers the entire township — all 528 square kilometers of it. Jianshi Township is home to roughly 9,500 residents, most of them Atayal, and this school — sharing the township's name — sits at the symbolic center of that community.

🌾 A Century of History, Reframed
Founded in 1918 as an aboriginal children's education institute under Japanese rule, the school's history has been reframed through its 2019 transition into an Atayal-centered curriculum.
The township's Atayal heart.
Jianshi Township's roughly 9,500 residents are overwhelmingly Atayal Indigenous people, and this namesake school's 2019 transformation into Klapay National Experimental Elementary School reflects a township-wide movement to center Atayal language, history, and place names in education.
