One of Taiwan's first modern secondary schools.

Chien Kuo High School traces its roots to 1898, when it began as a secondary department attached to the "National Language School" — one of the very first Western-style secondary schools established in Taiwan. It was reorganized as "Taiwan Provincial Taipei Chien Kuo Middle School" in December 1945 after Taiwan's retrocession, and took its current name in 1967. For decades the school was Taiwan's largest public high school by enrollment — in 1969 its day, night, and supplementary divisions together enrolled more than 7,500 students — and it has long sent roughly half of each graduating class, over 500 students a year, on to National Taiwan University. With over 120,000 alumni to date, it remains known for an unusually free-spirited campus culture and vibrant student clubs.

🧱 The Historic Red Building

Completed in 1909 and designed by government architect Kondō Jūrō in a late-Renaissance-influenced red-brick style, the campus's "Red Building" was designated a Taipei city monument in 1998 and restored in 2005, after a 1970s demolition plan was blocked by the then-principal.
