A school saved by its community.
Jiancheng Junior High was founded in 1968 by first principal Zheng Yingkui, opening classes in repurposed buildings at the old Taipei Tobacco Factory site; its first cohort that year already numbered 24 classes and 1,152 students, taught in converted tobacco-factory warehouses. In 1995 the Taipei City Government proposed closing the school, but students and teachers organized a "save the school" (護校) campaign that succeeded, and the school relocated in 2000 to the site of the former Taipei City Government building. Its current campus shares its site and building heritage with the Taipei Contemporary Art Museum (MOCA Taipei), a former Japanese-era Jiancheng elementary school and city-hall building, and the school is now branded as a bilingual-education school.

Jiancheng now brands itself as a "Bilingual School," part of a citywide push to expand bilingual instruction in Taipei's public junior highs.
A civic building's second life.
Jiancheng's campus occupies a Japanese-era municipal building now shared with the Taipei Contemporary Art Museum (MOCA Taipei), linking the school directly to Datong District's layered colonial-era and civic architectural history near Dadaocheng. Students pass daily beneath a building that once housed both a Japanese-era elementary school and Taipei's city government.
