A school whose family tree runs deep.

Jiamin Elementary traces its roots to 1934, when it opened under Japanese colonial rule as a "蕃童教育所" (banjo kyōikusho) — an education post specifically for Indigenous children. It was reorganized as Jiamin National School in 1946 after Taiwan's retrocession. As the population of Xiulin's mountain valleys grew through the mid-20th century, Jiamin spawned two branch schools that later became fully independent: Shuiyuan Elementary in 1955 and Jingmei Elementary in 1958. In its early decades, the school also took part in American-aid and World Food Programme child nutrition supplement efforts, reflecting how deeply postwar international aid touched even Taiwan's most remote schools.

🏔️

Jiamin's origin as a Japanese-era indigenous education post reflects Xiulin's long history as a Truku settlement area under colonial administration. Today the school continues to serve the Truku community of Jiamin Village in the township's mountain interior. See the Hualien county page for more on the region.
