From a sugar-plantation school to Taiwan's greenest campus.
Hushan Experimental Elementary School's earliest roots reach back to 1910, as a Japanese-era institution. It became “Tainan No. 1 Ordinary Higher Elementary School Chelujiao Branch” in 1915, independent as “Chelujiao Ordinary Elementary School” in 1917, and was taken over by Rende Village administration in 1921. Renamed “Fengrong National School” in 1941, it became “Taiwan Sugar Corporation's 7th School” in 1946 — originally founded as a company school for the children of sugarcane-plantation workers, reflecting Rende's industrial-agricultural past. It went through several more names before converting to “Hushan Experimental Elementary School” in August 2016, after adopting a four-quarter academic calendar and the UN Eco-Schools system. The school has earned all four permanent UN Eco-Schools “Green Flags,” a rare distinction that drove its conversion to experimental-school status, and media have called it Taiwan's “most beautiful lowland forest elementary school.”
