Named for a lake that is now farmland.
Hunei Junior High opened in 1958 as a branch of Gangshan Junior High, becoming independent on June 1, 1960. In 1965 it established its own branch campus in Qieding, which in turn became independent as Qieding Junior High in 1968. The school took its present name, Kaohsiung Municipal Hunei Junior High, following Kaohsiung's 2010 county-city merger. Its district's name, Hunei — meaning "lake-inside" — recalls a former inland lagoon that has long since been reclaimed for farmland.

🏫 Mother School to Qieding Junior High
The school's own 1965 branch campus in Qieding grew into an independent school by 1968 — a pattern of school "family trees" common across rural Kaohsiung.
🔗 Renamed After the 2010 Merger
When Kaohsiung County and City merged in 2010, the school adopted its current name, Kaohsiung Municipal Hunei Junior High.
Hunei, the district named for a lake.
Hunei District takes its name from a former inland lagoon that has since been reclaimed for farmland — a reminder that much of the flat farmland around the school was once open water. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
