Overflow relief for a booming riverside area.
Hulu Elementary School was founded on August 1, 1975, specifically to relieve overcrowding at Sezi Elementary as the population of the "Hulu Island" (葫蘆島) area surged. The school takes its name from this "Hulu" (gourd-shaped) river island area of Sezi at Shilin's northwestern tip, between the Danshui and Keelung Rivers. One of the youngest elementary schools in the district, it was split off directly from Sezi Elementary alongside Bailing Elementary.

Where two rivers meet.
Located on the Sezi/Hulu Island river-confluence area, Hulu Elementary's very founding — as overflow relief for the older Sezi Elementary — traces the rapid mid-20th-century population growth of Shilin's low-lying riverside farmland communities. See the Taipei county page for more on the region.
