Hujing Elementary School

Once the smallest school in Taiwan, this offshore-island school closed in 2024 after its last two students graduated — a quiet marker of island depopulation.

A century on a small island, ending with two students.

Hujing Elementary began in 1922 as a Japanese-era branch classroom of Magong's "第一公學校" (First Public School), on Hujing Islet, a small offshore island south of Magong known for its dramatic basalt sea cliffs. The teaching post was discontinued and revived more than once through the 1930s and 1940s before becoming an independent school in 1946 as "虎井國民學校." For a time it even managed its own branch school on neighboring Tongpan Islet, founded in 1957. It took its current name in 1968 and again in 1981. But as Penghu's outlying islands steadily lost population to the mainland and to Taiwan proper, enrollment dwindled year after year — until, by its final years, Hujing had become the smallest school in Taiwan. On July 1, 2024, with its last two graduating students having left, the school was formally dissolved and folded into Magong Elementary School as the "Hujing Branch Campus" (虎井分部). We keep this page as a historical record of a school that served its island community for over a century.

⚓ A Branch School of Its Own

For a time after 1957, Hujing Elementary ran its own branch school on neighboring Tongpan Islet, extending schooling to an even smaller outlying island.

🌋 A Century on a Basalt-Cliff Island

From its 1922 origins to its 2024 closure, the school served generations of children on Hujing Islet, known for its spectacular columnar basalt sea cliffs.

🕊️ A Dignified Ending, Not a Disappearance

Rather than simply vanishing, the school's legacy continues as the "Hujing Branch Campus" of Magong Elementary — the island's children still have a place to learn.

🌋

Hujing Islet, south of Magong, is known for its spectacular basalt/columnar volcanic sea cliffs — but like several of Penghu's smaller outlying islands, it has faced steady depopulation as younger generations move to Magong or Taiwan proper for work and schooling. Hujing Elementary's 2024 closure is a quiet but real marker of that demographic pressure facing Taiwan's remote fishing-island communities. See the Penghu county page for more on the region.
