National Huanan Commercial Vocational Senior High School was founded in April 1918, splitting off from Chiayi Public School as Chiayi Elementary Commercial School. In 1950, it was renamed "Huanan" in honor of alumnus Liu Chi-guang, chairman of Hua Nan Bank, following his donation to the school. It became a national school in 2000, and in 2017 reintroduced a general-studies curriculum, one of only a few schools in Chiayi besides the two major public high schools to offer this option.
華南高商創立於1918年（民國7年）4月，自嘉義公學校分出，初名嘉義公商業學校。民國39年（1950年），為感念校友、華南銀行董事長劉啟光先生捐資興學，更名為「華南」。民國89年（2000年）改隸國立。民國106年（2017年），該校恢復設置普通科，是嘉義除兩所主要公立高中外少數設有普通科的學校之一。
