One site, three distinct chapters of Taiwanese education.
Huagang Junior High School has carried its present name since August 1, 1968, but its site holds a much longer and more layered story. A Japanese-era elementary school stood here from 1910. After the war, in 1947, the site became the founding campus of Taiwan Provincial Hualien Normal School — the very first postwar normal school established anywhere in Taiwan — before that institution relocated to the Meilun area in 1960 and eventually grew into what is now National Dong Hwa University's Meilun Campus. Only after the normal school's departure was the site reorganized into today's county junior high school in 1968.

🏫 The Birthplace of Taiwan's First Postwar Normal School
戰後首所師範學校創始地
This site hosted the founding 1947 campus of Taiwan Provincial Hualien Normal School — the first normal school established in Taiwan after the war — before it relocated and eventually became part of NDHU.
🏯 Roots Reaching Back to 1910
校地歷史可溯至1910年
Long before the junior high school opened, a Japanese-era elementary school occupied the site starting in 1910, giving the location over a century of continuous educational use.
🏔️ Huagang Hill's Founding-Era Geography
花崗山與城市發展
The school's name ties directly to Huagang Hill, a key site in Hualien City's early Japanese-era urban development, anchoring the school in the city's founding-era geography.
A site woven through Hualien's founding chapters.
Its "Huagang" name ties directly to Hualien's founding-era geography — Huagang Hill was a key site in the city's early Japanese-era urban development, and the site's layered history spans colonial schooling, Taiwan's first postwar normal school, and today's junior high. See the Hualien County schools page for more on the region.
