Houtang Elementary began on April 1, 1928 as a branch of Lucao Elementary School, becoming an independent school in 1939 under the name Houku Public School, and was renamed Houku National School after Taiwan's 1945 retrocession. The school's motto embodies five core values — Health, Thankfulness, Explore, Self-confidence, and Cooperation — and it runs a hands-on garden-based food and agriculture education program using school vegetable plots. Music is also a point of pride, with recorder ensembles and folk song and English-language drama/storytelling competitions, alongside an attached kindergarten serving toddlers and mixed-age classes.
後塘國小創立於昭和3年（1928年）4月1日，最初為鹿草國小分校，民國28年（1939年）獨立設校，稱後堀公學校，戰後改稱後堀國民學校。學校校訓蘊含健康、感恩、探索、自信、合作五大價值，並推動以校園菜園為基礎的食農教學。音樂教育也是特色之一，設有直笛團，並舉辦民謠及英語話劇/說故事比賽，另附設幼兒園，招收小小班與混齡班。
