Over a century in a Baisha fishing village.
Houliao Elementary traces its origins to 1901, when it was founded as "Tongliang Public School" (通樑公學校) during the Japanese colonial era. It was renamed Houliao National School after WWII and took its current name in 1968. In 1946 the school had seven classes and 318 students in total, plus a branch class at Dacang Island, and it added a kindergarten the following year. With over 120 years of continuous history, it stands among the oldest schools in Penghu County.
