Houjin Junior High was founded on December 19, 1978, under the name "Kaohsiung Municipal Heping Junior High School." In August 2006, following a petition from local residents asking that the school's name reflect its actual location, it was renamed Houjin Junior High. The campus covers 30,834 square meters and offers general, gifted, sports, vocational, resource, and special education classes, with an all-weather covered sports court completed in October 2011. Its front gate opens directly onto Exit 1 of the Kaohsiung MRT's Houjin Station.
後勁國中創立於民國67年（1978年）12月19日，原名「高雄市立和平國民中學」。民國95年（2006年）8月，因地方人士連署要求改用實際所在地地名，學校更名為後勁國中。校地面積30,834平方公尺，設有普通班、資優班、體育班、技藝班、資源班及特教班，並於2011年10月完工一座風雨球場。學校正門緊鄰高雄捷運後勁站1號出口。

"Houjin" (後勁) is a Qing-dynasty Hoklo settlement name — the counterpart to nearby "Qianfeng" (前鋒, "vanguard") — and the community neighboring the CPC oil refinery. It is famous in Taiwan's environmental history as the birthplace of the "anti-Fifth Naphtha Cracker" (反五輕) protest movement, a landmark grassroots campaign against industrial pollution.
