A school founded after tragedy, in a neighborhood of protest.

Houjin Elementary was independently established on March 1, 1952, under the name "Kaohsiung Municipal Heping National School," later renamed "Kaohsiung Nanzih Heping Elementary School" in August 1968 and given its current name in August 2006. Before the school existed, children in this area had to travel a long distance to attend Nanzih Elementary School; earlier branch schools had been established here in 1921 and 1934 but both closed due to insufficient enrollment. It was a 1950 traffic accident that killed a local student commuting to school that ultimately spurred local gentry to organize a new branch campus, leading to the school's founding two years later.

What makes this school worth knowing.

💔 Founded After a Tragedy

A 1950 traffic accident that killed a student commuting to a distant school spurred local gentry to organize a new branch campus, leading directly to the school's founding in 1952.

🔁 Two Failed Attempts Before Success

Branch schools were attempted here twice before, in 1921 and 1934, but both closed due to insufficient enrollment — making the eventual 1952 founding the third and lasting attempt.

✊ In the Heart of Protest History

The school sits in Houjin, one of Nanzih's most historically significant neighborhoods and the birthplace of the 1980s–90s anti-Fifth Naphtha Cracker (反五輕) environmental protest movement.

Local Culture ·

In the birthplace of a protest movement.

"Houjin" (後勁) is a Qing-dynasty Hoklo settlement name, and the neighborhood remains one of Nanzih's most historically resonant — home to the 1980s–90s "anti-Fifth Naphtha Cracker" (反五輕) protest movement, a landmark chapter in Taiwan's grassroots environmental history.
