Houbi Senior High opened in 1955 as a branch campus of Chiayi Girls' Senior High School under founding director Liu Wen-hua, becoming an independent school in 1959 as "Taiwan Provincial Houbi Senior High School." It took its current name in 1970 after junior-high classes were phased out, and became a national school in 2000. Sited near Houbi Railway Station on the island's main north-south rail line, it is one of the few senior highs serving the rural Houbi/Baihe rice-farming area.
國立後壁高中創立於民國44年（1955年），初為嘉義女中後壁分部，首任主任為劉文華，民國48年（1959年）獨立設校，定名「臺灣省立後壁高級中學」；民國59年（1970年）因初中部裁撤而更名，民國89年（2000年）2月改制為國立。校址鄰近縱貫鐵路後壁車站，是後壁、白河一帶稻作區少數兼具普通與職業教育的高中。

Houbi District is the rice-farming township made famous by the 2004 documentary "Let It Be" (無米樂), which profiled elderly farmers in the nearby Jingliao area continuing traditional, low-mechanization rice cultivation. Sited along the Taiwan Railway's western trunk line in the heart of this district, Houbi Senior High has for seven decades served the farming families of the same countryside the film captured.
