A school that outlived the village it was named for.

Hongmaogang Elementary School's history begins in 1924, during the Japanese colonial era, when it opened as the "Hongmaogang Branch Classroom" of Dalinpu Public School. It became an independent Hongmaogang Public School soon after, was renamed Hongmaogang National School (and later National Elementary School) in 1946 following the end of Japanese rule, then became Haishan National School in 1951, and Haishan National Elementary School in 1968. Each name change tracked shifts in the surrounding community. That community was Hongmaogang, a centuries-old fishing village at the mouth of Kaohsiung Harbor. Beginning in the late 20th century, the village came under a development freeze lasting roughly three decades as the government planned to expand Kaohsiung Harbor's container terminal into an intercontinental hub. The village was ultimately demolished and its residents relocated. The school itself stopped enrolling new students for a year in 2007 as the community around it emptied out. It was rebuilt and reopened in April 2008, restoring its original historic name — Hongmaogang Elementary School — and incorporating design elements that preserve the village's memory: coral-rock walls, mosaic artwork, and a dedicated "memory corridor" recalling the fishing community that once stood here.

Long before the container terminal, Hongmaogang was a fishing community at the mouth of Kaohsiung Harbor — a history now preserved in the school's architecture rather than its surrounding streets.

Hongmaogang: a village remembered in brick and mosaic.

For centuries, Hongmaogang was a fishing village at the mouth of Kaohsiung Harbor, its residents living from the sea much as their ancestors had. As Kaohsiung Harbor grew into one of the world's busiest container ports in the late 20th century, the government planned to expand its terminal facilities directly onto the village's land. A development freeze lasting roughly three decades left the community in limbo before it was ultimately relocated and demolished. When the elementary school that had served Hongmaogang for over eighty years reopened in 2008, it did so on the same ground, deliberately restoring its historic name and building coral-rock walls, mosaic art, and a memory corridor into the new campus — so that the village's story would not disappear along with its streets. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
