A school built for a suburb that grew almost overnight.
Tzu Chiang Junior High School opened in 1995 after land planning began in 1991, built to serve the rapidly growing Fengchuan and Shiliugu neighborhoods on Hualien City's western outskirts. The area had been largely agricultural until the construction of the North-Link Railway and the new Hualien Station transformed it into a residential suburb needing local schooling. The school is designated an Indigenous-focus school and, as of 2024, had been led by seven principals since its founding.

Land planning for the school began in 1991, four years before it opened in 1995 — a deliberate, planned response to a rapidly urbanizing neighborhood.
Growth tied to the railway era.
Its growth tracks Hualien City's expansion driven by the North-Link Railway, which transformed a farming community into a residential suburb needing local schooling. See the Hualien County schools page for more on the region.
