Zhongzheng Elementary School

Zhongzheng Elementary opened in September 1956 as the first new elementary school built in Hualien City proper after Retrocession in 1945, aside from the four older "Ming-" schools that trace to the Japanese colonial era. It began modestly, with just 9 staff members and 344 students, and has since grown to roughly 2,000 students. Its rapid postwar growth led the school to spin off two branch campuses — one that became today's Zhongxiao Elementary, and another that became Xinyi Elementary — both of which later achieved independence.

中正國小創立於民國45年（1956年）9月，是花蓮市區在光復後（除了歷史更悠久、可追溯至日治時期的四所「明」字輩學校外）新設立的第一所國小。創校初期僅有教職員9人、學生344人，如今已成長為約2,000名學生的規模。因戰後人口快速成長，學校陸續分出兩所分校——一所後來成為忠孝國小，另一所成為信義國小——兩校日後皆獨立設校。
