The only school of its kind in Taiwan.
Xinshe Elementary holds a unique place in Taiwan's education system: it is the country's only elementary school serving the Kavalan people, one of Taiwan's officially recognized Indigenous peoples. In October 2024, the school completed a transformation into an Indigenous experimental school, adopting the Kavalan name "pateRungan," meaning "a place where boats moor and dock." Its student body reflects the mixed Indigenous character of the surrounding village, drawing Amis, Bunun, Sakizaya, and Kavalan students alike. The school has also installed solar power generation equipment as part of its campus development.

As Taiwan's only Kavalan-designated elementary school, pateRungan sits at the very center of efforts to keep the Kavalan people's language and identity alive for future generations.
