A small mountain school, not to be confused with its Taitung namesake.

Hongye Elementary traces its roots to January 1934, when it opened under Japanese rule as an "educational institute for southern-savage children" (悅付南蕃童教育所) — the language of the era's colonial administration. Renamed several times over the decades, including a 1958 change to avoid duplicating a Taipei County township name, the school celebrated its 90th anniversary in the 2020s. Today it is a small campus of about six classes and roughly three dozen students, serving the Truku Indigenous community of Hongye Village. Note: Taiwan has three separate elementary schools named "Hongye" (紅葉國小) — in Taitung, Hualien, and Nantou. This school, in Wanrong Township, Hualien, is distinct from the Taitung Hongye Elementary famous for its 1968 Little League baseball upset over a visiting Japanese team.

One name, three schools, one distinct village.

🍁

Hongye Village sits within mountainous Wanrong Township 萬榮鄉, a Truku Indigenous community in Hualien County's Central Mountain Range foothills. While the name "紅葉" (Red Leaf) is most famous internationally through a different Hongye Elementary in Taitung County — home to the celebrated 1968 Little League baseball team — this Hualien school is an entirely separate institution with its own century-spanning Truku community history.
