A tiny mountain school with a century of history.

Zhulin Elementary's roots stretch back to before 1923, when it began as "麥巴來教育所," an educational institute established under Japanese colonial rule. It became "Zhulin National School" (竹林國民學校) in May 1947 and took its present name in 1968. In 1956, the school was rebuilt using structures salvaged from a Japanese-era Mandarin-language training center. Today, Zhulin operates as the Zhulin Branch Campus of nearby Huayuan Elementary School, a change made in August 1987 — it is no longer a fully independent school, though it remains a distinct and storied campus in its own right, with only about 10 students as of 2023, making it one of Taiwan's smallest and most remote mountain schools.

🌿 A Century-Old Colonial-Era Origin

The school's lineage traces to before 1923 as "麥巴來教育所," a Japanese colonial-era educational institute, before evolving through several names to become Zhulin.

🏘️ Now Huayuan Elementary's Zhulin Branch

Since August 1987, Zhulin has operated as a branch campus of nearby Huayuan Elementary School — an administrative change that hasn't diminished the depth of its history.

The sparse mountain settlement pattern of Wufeng.

🏔️

Originally established as a colonial "education institute" for local children, Zhulin's century-long survival as a tiny branch school reflects the sparse, scattered Atayal and Saisiyat settlement pattern in Wufeng's deep mountains, where even the smallest communities have long maintained their own schoolhouses.
