Yuandong Elementary began in 1956 as a branch of Zhudong Zhongshan Elementary School, taking its present name in 1968. The school shares its name and general area — Yuandingzi, south of central Zhudong — with the neighboring Yuandong Junior High School, though the two are separate institutions with distinct histories. Yuandong Elementary is one of several elementary schools across the township that trace their lineage back to Zhudong Elementary's original branch network, formed as the town's population grew during its logging and commercial boom years.
員崠國小創立於民國45年（1956年），原為竹東中山國小分校，民國57年（1968年）更為現名。學校與鄰近的員東國中同樣位於竹東南側的員崠仔地區，且校名相近，但兩者為各自獨立、歷史沿革不同的學校。員崠國小是竹東鎮內多所源自竹東國小分校網絡的學校之一，該網絡因竹東鎮在伐木與商業繁榮時期人口成長而逐漸擴展。
