From a Nanjing Navy school to a design powerhouse.
Haiching Vocational High School traces its history to the Nanjing Naval Dependents' School, founded in 1949 by Admiral Gui Yongqing to educate the children of Republic of China Navy personnel. When the Navy retreated to Taiwan that year, the school relocated along with naval families to Zuoying, and it became a Kaohsiung municipal school in 1981. Haiching has built a strong national reputation for its design programs, earning the nickname "Fu Hsing in the north, Haiching in the south" (北復興,南海青) alongside Taipei's Fu Hsing Trade and Arts School. Its alumni include Olympic weightlifting champion Hsu Shu-ching and former Premier Lin Chuan.

🔗 A Shared Origin With Yongqing Elementary
與永清國小同源
Both Haiching and nearby Yongqing Elementary trace their founding to Admiral Gui Yongqing's Navy dependents' schools — living monuments to Zuoying's post-1949 naval history.
A living link to the Navy's 1949 retreat.
Haiching's 1949 origin as a Navy dependents' school, and its relocation to Taiwan alongside fleeing naval families, is a direct living link to the ROC Navy's retreat to Taiwan and the naval villages that shaped Zuoying's postwar character — a history it shares with nearby Yongqing Elementary, also founded by Admiral Gui Yongqing. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
