A century anchoring the township seat.

Haiduan Elementary was founded in 1922 during the Japanese colonial era as one of the earliest education institutes established in a Bunun area, opening with just 13 students. Because surrounding Bunun settlements were often more than 10 kilometers away in the mountains, the school built dormitories so children could board on campus rather than face an impossible daily commute. Enrollment swelled dramatically from under 100 to 363 students within five years starting in 1954, peaking around 480 students in the 1960s and 1970s before declining sharply as the region's population changed.
