A school built as a language-policy instrument.
Taipei Mandarin Experimental Elementary School was founded in 1913 under Japanese rule as the third elementary school attached to the Governor-General's Taipei Normal School. In May 1946, shortly after Taiwan's retrocession, it was repurposed and renamed "Experimental Elementary School Attached to the Committee for the Promotion of Mandarin" — an institution created specifically to promote Mandarin ("國語") education across newly-retroceded Taiwan. The school came under Taipei City governance and took its current name in 1967. It sits in the South Sea Academy area, sharing an address block with Chien Kuo High School's neighborhood.

An artifact of postwar Sinicization policy.
The school's founding purpose — teaching Mandarin ("國語") as the new official language after 1945 — makes it a direct artifact of Zhongzheng District's role as the administrative center that carried out Taiwan's postwar Sinicization policy. See the Taipei county page for more on the region.
