From a refinery workers' school to a university affiliate.
Guoguang Senior High was founded in 1959 as a private school established by the Chinese Petroleum Corporation (CPC), Taiwan's state oil company, to educate the children of its refinery employees. In February 2005, the school was converted from private to public and placed under the affiliation of National Sun Yat-sen University, becoming the university's affiliated secondary school. Today it operates as a complete secondary school combining junior high and senior high divisions on a single six-year track, with a campus of about 6.13 hectares adjacent to Youchang Refinery Elementary School, and around 1,080 students studying under the school motto "Diligence, Respect, Sincerity, and Perseverance" (勤敬誠毅).
What makes this school worth knowing.
🏭 Born From the Refinery Workforce
Founded in 1959 as a private school for the children of Chinese Petroleum Corporation refinery employees, the school's very existence is tied to Nanzih's oil-industry history.
🎓 From Private School to University Affiliate
In February 2005 the school converted from private to public and became affiliated with National Sun Yat-sen University — an unusual path very few Taiwanese secondary schools have followed.
📘 A Six-Year Complete Secondary School
Guoguang combines junior high and senior high divisions on a single campus of roughly 6.13 hectares, serving about 1,080 students under the motto "Diligence, Respect, Sincerity, and Perseverance."
⛽ Neighboring Youchang Refinery Elementary
The campus sits directly beside Youchang Refinery Elementary School, another institution built for CPC employees' families — together the two schools mark Nanzih's postwar petrochemical history.
Built on the history of a refinery.
Guoguang's origin is inseparable from Nanzih's Chinese Petroleum Corporation refinery — the refinery itself grew out of the Japanese-era "Imperial Japanese Navy Sixth Fuel Plant," taken over by CPC after 1945. Establishing schools for employees' children, including Guoguang and Youchang Refinery Elementary, was part of stabilizing the refinery workforce, making these campuses a living record of Nanzih's industrial development.
