A century-old school on the tidal creek.
Guogou Elementary School was founded on March 31, 1920, during the Japanese colonial era, as "Guogou Public School," at Tainan County Dongshi Township Budai Village Guogou No. 766. It was renamed Guogou National School (1933), Tainan County Budai Township No. 3 National School (1946), Tainan County Budai Township Guogou National School (1947), reorganized under Chiayi County in 1950, and became Guogou National Elementary School in 1968. The school celebrated its 97th anniversary in 2017, consistent with its 1920 founding, and survived severe damage from a 1935 typhoon. In 1940 it established a branch, Guishe Branch, which became an independent school — today's Guilin Elementary — in 1945, showing its role as an educational "parent" to other Budai-area schools. The school runs strong arts programs alongside international education and English-language instruction.

Named for the tidal creek it crosses.
Founded under Japanese rule as part of the Budai salt-and-fishing settlement network, its historic name literally means "across the ditch/channel," referencing the tidal creek geography — and the school's century-long presence tracks the growth of Budai's oyster and milkfish aquaculture villages. See the Chiayi county page for more on the region.
