Profile

A turtle-shell house on a school campus.

Guhua Elementary School traces its origins to 1905, when its predecessor, Shuaimang Public School, was founded during the Japanese colonial era; it became independent as Guhua National School in April 1952 after relocating to Guhua Village. Almost the entire student body is Paiwan, and the school has been designated an “indigenous key school” since 1998. Its most distinctive feature is Taiwan's first campus-based traditional Southern-Paiwan “turtle-shell house” (龜甲屋), built from stone, wood, bamboo, and thatch, where students hold immersive Paiwan-language conversation practice and traditional song sessions. The school also runs a self-developed 12-volume local-culture curriculum funded by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, drawing on the Shiwen tribal community's expertise in traditional song, dance, mother-tongue instruction, pandanus-leaf weaving, bow-making, and scabbard carving.

🐢 Taiwan's First Campus Turtle-Shell House

Guhua built the first campus-based traditional Southern-Paiwan turtle-shell house in Taiwan, using stone, wood, bamboo, and thatch for immersive Paiwan-language and traditional-song practice.

📚 A 12-Volume Local Culture Curriculum

Funded by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, the school's self-developed curriculum draws on the Shiwen tribal community's expertise in song, dance, mother-tongue instruction, weaving, bow-making, and carving.

🏫 A Designated Indigenous Key School

Since 1998, Guhua has been designated an indigenous key school, with a student body that is almost entirely Paiwan.

🌊 Rebuilt After Typhoon Thelma

The school survived relocation after Typhoon Thelma destroyed its campus in 1972, moving to its current site in 1974 alongside a village relocation — a story of resilience woven into its history.

Guhua, living Paiwan cultural transmission.

🐢

Chunri is a Paiwan indigenous mountain township, and Guhua's Shiwen tribal community maintains distinctive traditional crafts — song and dance, pandanus-leaf weaving, archery, and wood carving — actively taught through the school's own curriculum. With its campus turtle-shell house and 12-volume culture curriculum, Guhua exemplifies genuine, living Paiwan cultural transmission rather than a token indigenous label.
