Named for a temple that no longer stands.
Guanting Elementary School traces its roots to 1940, when it was established as a branch campus of Neimen National School called '內門國民學校觀音亭分校場' — its records date the founding using the Republic of China calendar (ROC year 29), even though Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule at the time, a calendar convention rather than a claim about sovereignty. The school became independent in 1946 as 'Kaohsiung County Neimen Township Guanyinting National School,' and was renamed Guanting Elementary in 1951. In 1966, one of its own branch campuses, 內東分班, split off to become 西門國民學校 (Ximen National School). Today it is designated a remote-area (偏遠/特偏) school.
What makes this school worth knowing.
⛩️ A Name from a Vanished Temple
校名源自觀音亭
The school's name comes from a Guanyin (觀音) temple pavilion (亭) that once stood in the area — a piece of local history preserved in the school's name long after the structure itself disappeared.
🌱 From Branch School to Independent Campus
從分校到獨立設校
Guanting began in 1940 as a branch of Neimen National School, becoming fully independent in 1946 and settling into its current name in 1951.
🌿 A Branch of Its Own Split Off
分出西門國民學校
In 1966, Guanting's own 內東分班 branch campus separated to become an independent school, Ximen National School — part of the area's ongoing pattern of small branch schools growing and splitting.
Named for a temple long gone.
Guanting Elementary takes its name from a Guanyin (觀音) temple pavilion (亭) that once stood in this part of Neimen District — the temple itself is gone, but its name lives on through the school. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
